Michael has been a consumer advocate for over 30 years, representing consumers on boards, councils, and committees. Michael was the Executive Director of the Consumers Council of Canada (2000 to 2008) and the Homeowner Protection Centre (2008 to 2014). He sat on standards committees for the Canadian Standards Association, the Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada, and the Canadian Gas Association. He is a former director of Advertising Standards Canada (ASC) board and served as a public representative on the ASC’s National Consumer Response Council. He represented the consumer interest on the board of Technical Standards and Safety Authority for 6 years. He was a founding board member of the Electrical Safety Authority, responsible for safety and certification of electrical installations in Ontario. He was a consumer representative on the Building Advisory Council for Ontario’s Minister of Housing. Michael was a Director on the Ontario Climate Change Solutions Deployment Corporation (GreenON) from 2017 to 2018. More recently he was on the boards of both Tarion Warranty Corporation and the Home Construction Regulatory Authority.
Michael has facilitated hundreds of training sessions for audiences across Canada. He brings a deep understanding of housing having worked with builders, product manufacturers, and suppliers from across Canada to improve building practices. He has been an active participant in the development of over 60 corporate strategic plans. He has led and facilitated hundreds of directed sessions where teams have been expected to collaborate in problem-solving, solution-finding, and action planning.
Michael is a professional engineer. He has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering and a Master of Engineering in Civil with specialty in building science, both from the University of Toronto. He has recognized expertise in building science and housing technology. He has sat on Building Code development committees at the National and Ontario level. He has an Institute of Corporate Directors Designation.
